The southwestern U.S. hosts a variety of dramatic landscapes: from giant mountain ranges with their towering peaks (the Sierra Nevada, the Rocky Mountains), to deserts with their sand dunes and variety of cacti and vegetation, to deep canyons (the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon). Many of these landscapes offer glimpses of the vast expanses inhabited by Native Americans and later encountered by westward-bound pioneers.
